What is baby led weaning?
Baby led weaning (BLW) means offering suitable finger foods that a baby can pick up and bring to their own mouth. Some families combine self-feeding with spoon-fed mashed foods or purées. There is no requirement to choose one approach exclusively. Starting solids adds to milk feeding; it does not mean suddenly stopping breast milk or infant formula.
When can you start baby led weaning?
Solids generally begin around six months, when developmental readiness is also present. Look for steady head control, the ability to remain sitting upright, coordination to bring food to the mouth, and the ability to swallow it. A birthday alone is not a readiness check. For a baby born early or with feeding difficulties, ask the care team about timing and appropriate textures.
First foods: make room for iron
Include sources of iron and zinc, such as iron-fortified infant cereal or appropriately prepared meat. The planner leaves food selection to you and your care team. A label such as “healthy” does not establish that a food is suitable for a particular baby. Think about preparation as well as the ingredient, and keep offering breast milk or infant formula alongside solids.
Food preparation and choking prevention
Match shape, size and texture to your baby’s development. Avoid hard raw pieces, whole grapes, whole nuts, popcorn and thick spoonfuls of nut butter. Have your baby seated upright and watch throughout the meal. Calm, unrushed meals matter; do not feed while a child is walking, lying down or riding in a car. Read the CDC’s full preparation guidance below and learn infant choking first aid from a qualified provider.
Where do allergens fit?
Do not use this planner as an allergy test. Ask your pediatrician how to introduce common allergens in suitable forms; babies with severe eczema or an egg allergy may need specific advice before peanut introduction. Record preparation questions on the card so they are easy to bring to an appointment.
Turn an idea into a printable meal card
Choose a date and meal, add an iron-rich food and an optional second food, then describe how you will prepare them. Your card includes preparation reminders and your own questions. It does not calculate a portion, generate a feeding prescription or certify the ingredients as safe. After the meal, the food exploration journal offers a separate place to remember what happened.
